Have you ever noticed that it is the fans that creates rivalries. If it were the team themselves, every game they wouldn't play baseball and instead they would fight. Occasionally there will be a fight, but basically, except for a few small exceptions(like Piazza and Clemens) both teams are friendly toward each other, not like people who hate each other. Its the fans who say they hate some team and create the rivalries.

Babe Ruth played for both the Red Sox and the Yankees, as did Roger Clemens and now Johnny Damon plays for the Yankees. They don't care. It's just business.

Yes, of course it primarily comes from the fans. At a Royals--Red Sox game in Boston last year, I observed dozens of vocal Kansas City fans being completely ignored and a single Yankee fan at that same game taunted by hundreds if not thousands of fans. It is also sports talk radio and other media focusing on Yankees -- Red Sox games (as an example). Some players do not like each other. Several Red Sox players spoke on the record against Alex Rodriguez several years ago. Rodriguez apparently had a problem with Bronson Arroyo, as shown by the fight on July 24, 2004 and the ball that A-Rod tried to bat out of Arroyo's glove in the sixth game of the 2004 ALCS. The Red Sox and Yankees had a bench emptying fight in the 2003 ALCS and again on July 24, 2004.

Sure it's the fans, if you watch a Sox/Yankees game, Giambi & Youklis gab away with the other teams guys who make first base. They'd be stupid to REALLY hate each other; they may be on the same team someday.

Sure it is, and what's wrong with that? It's more fun for the fans to have someone to cheer against as well as cheer for. All plots are more exciting when there's an archenemy to defeat! For the players it's a job, so they don't get a ll wrapped up in it, but for the fans it is entertainment after all!
