As others have said, make sure doors and windows are locked and closed.

When you're sleeping, keep a phone close by. Keep some sort of object with you for self-defense.

Hide any valuables, especially if they can be easily spotted.

Watch out for pepper spray, or get pepper spray yourself.

If you live in a place where people can see inside your home when you open the blinds/curtains, try not to do that, even if you are home. You never know who's looking.

Lock doors and windows. Have 911 on speed dial. Converse with neighbors and set up a watch (coordinate this with local police too) Request police to patrol more often around the neighborhood. Have a baseball bat at the ready.

Depending on which state you are in, have a gun handy too.

Locking your doors and windows seems a given. Who doesn't already lock their doors and windows in today's society. What you really should do is get one of those monitored alarm systems for your home. Most will come and install for around $100. Then you have to pay a fee if you want monthly monitoring. It might be a lot but its your safety we are talking about here.

Well, maybe you could move your stuff to a friend's or relative's house. Do you have a dog? I don't think locks are foolproof at keeping out burglars. they just deter them.

How do you know this? Lock the doors, tell your parents, etc. Check the basement if no one is home - make sure he isn't down there.
