Most people's music taste is not based on their own personal inner self, but on the environment surrounding them.

In other words, they're all posers and want to be in the "IN" group and be in the fad.

Therefore, if a small group of people start telling people around them that Green Day or Shakira is good music and everybody else who doesn't think so are losers, then everyone therefore follows their example and "likes" Green Day and other "popular artists". It has a wave effect.

Green Day and others may also have good marketing strategies and propaganda at their disposal.

People go for that kind of stuff. Green Day is loud and fast, and Shakira is considered sexy in a society where sex sells. My favorite music is never on the top charts, but thats why I like it, only the true music fan would listen to it, and I know I'll always be original.

Depends on what you consider good music. I think it has to do with how gulible the average teenager is (they tend to be more into trends and go with what MTV tells them is cool). Also, Green Day had grunge appeal when they started out, for those that didn't care to shower and enjoyed smoking pot, Shakira just has a sound the US finds to be new and she has great abs. It doesn't matter if you can sing as long as you look good or have some quirk that appeals to the youth. Sad but true. As far as good music, its hard to find any on the radios these days.

Agreed! Don't know why. I guess as a culture we're desensitized to good music. I totally agree with your point. I have a blog about it on my Yahoo 360 page if you can access it. I think the acceptanmce of (c)rap music and a lot of alternative music opened the door to musical monotony and lyrical ignorance. Shakiras not bad though. She is very talented. She has a unique voice and writes all her songs. She sings bi lingular. She can dance. My critique is about current pop music, not necessarily her.

Because what you might think is trash the majority of people might like. I personally like Green Day's older stuff... I dislike their new stuff. Shakira is probably listened to a lot of the time because a lot of guys (and probably a few girls) think she's really hot... and Green Day is just a very common band, they've been around a long time and people like their stuff.

Or ever think that it's just your opinion on the matter? Maybe you like umpopular stuff? I hate rap and that's all they ever play on MTV now...
