I just bought my wife a laptop for her to use at school, now I have to buy a wireless router to set up a network, how do I make the house a hotspot? and how easy is it to set it up to my cable modem?

Depending on which router you got will determine how hard it will be, mine took about 30 minutes and that included dealing with my two kids. once you install the hardware there will be an install "wizard" that will guide you through the process. That is of course if you are using windows. Just go to my network places and it will walk you through the process

I recently did the same thing.

Hooking up the router to the cable modem is easy. Currently, you should have a phone line running from the cable modem to your computer. When you get the router, you unplug that cable and pug it in to the main port on the router (may say Input). Then you need another phone cable to run from the router to your computer (if it is not going to be wireless). Sometimes this extra cable is included with the router you purchase. There will be a CD you get with the router that helps you to set it up, and there are additional 'guides' online. Once the router is running, your house will be a hotspot at any point within the routers range. Any computer with a wireless card will automatically pick up the router and ask you if you want to connect.
