I am a diabetic and also get very bad charlie horses in my legs-wake me up and I fling myself out of bed-have to stand on it. I then drink diet tonic water which contains quinine. It helps me I hope hubby will try it and it works for him. I know how very painful these are. In fact I did a lot of walking today and just had one in my upper leg-usually they are in calf. Good luck to him!!

For immediate relief, tell him to extend his leg and press down with his heel as far as he can. This should relieve the charley horse. I've read also that potassium supplements might help for a longer term solution.

The best way to relieve a cramp is to put pressure on it. So if his right leg hurts have him stand on his right leg. Cramps often come from a lack of potasium. Have him eat a bannana a day to keep potasium up.

I have leg cramps! Yuk! Does your husband take a statin drug?
Like Lipitor or Tricor? One of their side effects are leg cramps.
My doctor told me that Quinine Sulfate 325 mg. helps - and by
God - it does! It's a prescription. If I don't take it - boom! Leg
cramp! You have no idea how much this has helped me -
those things are so painful - I understand completely!
Try asking the Dr. for this and see if it helps....

I am sometimes bothered with this same problem. It tends to happen when I have perspired a lot, usually while doing some outside activity. What works for me is to increase my sodium intake or drink orange juice and other fluids.

Try either a B complex vitamin or perhaps milk thistle capsules. I don't know if it will work for you, but I used to have a horrendous problem with charley horses and lost many hours of sleep because of it. I don't any more.
