leaves of plants, but they will stick to their favourite species of plant and not eat anything much else. this is a species specific relationship between the caterpilar and host species of plant. some will also eat fruit. for some caterpillars, artificial diet has been developed

They seem to really like Clematis, Cherry-tree, and Johanisberren (I don't remember this one in English) leaves, the meanies are killing my garden! But, if you read the Hungry Caterpillar, they also eat apples, cupcakes, pickles, ice cream or what have you, but I think that book is misleading and providing false information to our youth.

depends upon the caterpillars....they eat several types of foliage. Some will eat only one kind; others can eat nearly anything that grows...
example: bombyx morii (silkworm) eats mulberry leaves only
gypsy moth: eats ANY growing vegetation including evergreens
