Interestingly, there is one situation in which oxidation of the tungsten filament is useful. Quartz-halogen bulbs operate at a higher temperature than ordinary tungsten filament bulbs. This gives a better approximation to daylight and a higher proportion of the power is converted into light rather than heat. If ordinary tungsten filament bulbs operated at such a high temperature, the filament would soon evaporate and fail. But the bulb contains a halogen like iodine vapour.It reacts with the tungsten deposited on the inside of the glass bulb, which is fairly cool, to form tungsten iodide, then when the gaseous tungsten iodide comes in contact with the hot filament, it decomposes, and the tungsten is deposited back on the filament.

Actually, the filament does vaporize slowly and deposits on the bulb glass. This is known as the "Edison Effect". The inert gas in the bulb does slow this down, but doesn't eliminate it.

I believe there is no gas whatsoever in the bulb, If I remeber correctly it's a vacuum insde the bulb.

In light bulbs, there's Argon gas filled inside which is inert and prevents any reaction and also, there's no other gas to react with.

There's no oxygen in the lightbulb for it to oxidize with, only a little bit of Xenon (I think) to keep the filiment from vaporizing slowly.

it is a mixture of nitrogen and argon which protects the tungsten filament from oxydisation with oxygen.
Other inert gases protect the filament such as helium, krypton,... (all of the noble gases)
