unlike a CD, DVDs are copy protected. they dont want everyone burning zillions of copys and sharing it with their friends. if you really want to get movies on your computer i would suggest something like handbreak for mac. or something for windows like this. http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/dvd2mpeg4.html

USE YOUR OWN DVDS THOUGH. ITS ILLEGAL IF ITS NOT YOURS!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're talking about copy protected DVDs, well... I didn't tell you, but Google search for a DVD decoder (or something like that). This will override the copy protection and save the contents of the DVD to your computer as a VOB file. (VOB files are badly named. You should save them in an easy-to find folder with nothing else in it.) You will then need to find a program that converts the VOB files into a recognizable format, such as MPEG-4. Remember, this is illegal, so don't try it when the police are visiting or anything.

You have to use a program called DVD shrink. It is illegal to use in the U.S but you can find it online if you really want to make a copy of your dvd.

copying is easy but detecting it is sometimes difficult due to the encrytion on computers rather then dvd players. I rather you read below the mention link.
