Kids always love to ride the cable cars & the trolleys in San Francisco. You also can take 'em to Fisherman's Wharf or to the Exploratorium. Another fun outing is to take the ferry across the bay to Sausalito (it passes directly under the Golden Gate Bridge). You also might want to check out Alcatraz, or go to Coit Tower or Twin Peaks if you want some breathtaking & spectacular views of San Francisco.
Incidentally, while you're at Fisherman's Wharf, try out the clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls. Kids seem really fascinated by the concept of eating soup out of a carved-out loaf of bread.
