Contrary to popular belief the washer doesn't eat them, other socks do, from jealousy I'd guess. I have actually caught them in the act! Also, it happens in the dryer, not the washer.

Evidently you never read Erma Bombeck's column when she addressed this very subject. The answer is that they go to the Phoenix Socks Exchange! Good luck finding them. I have always considered mine gone for good, By The Time They Get to Phoenix!! :-)

I always thought that the dryer did that. I swear I have little gremlin sock thieves that live in my dryer.

It chews they up, and you have to put them back together again, they are commonly known as "lint", when they are in that condition.
