Because most colleges require you live in their dormitories the first year (for social reasons)
AND
the cost of parking is crazy in colleges.

Who says that you can't have a car for your first year of college? Maybe you're planning on going to a huge school where a lot of people want to have cars so they had to put a restriction on who can be allowed to have cars at school? I know where I go you can have a car as long as you can pay for the permit to park in their lots. Check into things more and see what the deal is with your college. Good luck!

Actually, many students are given a car from parents or earn extra money working part time....But i think in the college's view it's better for students to socialize...You'd have to ask college admissions...

I had to go through this. They did it to ensure you fully immersed in the college culture ie dorm life, dining halls, leisure activities. It's supposed to provide a sense of community.

depends on the school...some schools you can and some schools you cant. reasons vary. some schools dont allow it simply because there is not enough parking. others dont allow it because they dont want the first year kids running home every time they get home sick.

You can have one, you just can't park it anywhere. And no, I have no idea why. It was also true 35 years ago my friend, and I did not understand it then either.
