I heard in a Mac ad that Macs don't get viruses... I have a powerbook but i am afraid to use it on the internet because I am afraid that it will get all messed up like my PC laptop did once I started surfing with it... It gets a lot of spyware and it is slower than a mo-fo... And before I put anti-virus software on it and surfed the web it got a killer virus and I had to reinstall all the windows...

Will my Mac get messed up by surfing without anti-virus software...?

In the passed (2 years ago) Mac's wouldn't be infected by viruses because the viruses targeted Microsoft...but now, "Hackers" have developed Viruses and Trojans the Will and Do infect Mac's...
So to answer your question YES, you have to have Antivirus software in place Before surfing the Internet!!! That, and a good Firewall as well...and goes without saying AntiSpyware programing as well...Yea it's a lot to have to put into place before going online, but well worth the trouble...

Well as the ads say that Macs can not get a virus or be infected by spyware, I say you should get a broadband connection and surf away. We all know that all advertising is true and they would never lie to us!

Look at it this way:
Yes Macs do get viruses, dispite what the TV ads say.

If you were a virus programmer looking to cause destruction, which would you targer, the REALLY common Microsoft Windows, or the less common Mac OS which rather sucks and nobody likes because of its 3rd party software limit. I would rather targer the more common computer if I wanted to cause destruction. Wouldent you?

Thats not true. Just recently there was a tremendous virus outbreak for macs (miniscule in PC virus scale) and everyone was baffled becuase mac's were supposedly virus free. (This was 2 weeks ago? Check out google news)

Anyway, you "dont need one" for PC's either, but I would call you crazy not to get one.

In the long run, get a virus scanner. AVG is free if you dont want to pay (not sure if it works for macs)

Yes, Macs are virtually immune to viruses.

Ads can't lie, there's just fine print.
