When discussing about something as subjective as fashion (and fashion purchases), you can't reasonably expect a logical reason. Like someone said "to make a statement comes to mind". Yes, a woman who wears Gucci or Chanel boots does come out of the crowd. There is a feeling a self confidence radiating of her. So, who wouldn't want to have that same "aura" of glamour?
(For one, I love women in expensive clothes)

This doesn't apply to all women. I think society and the media reinforces how a "normal" woman should behave and the types of items she should want, and we're all encouraged to think we should want purses and shoes no matter what the cost. I personally hate shopping, and while I do carry a purse I couldn't care less about labels or name brands and I'm a bargain hunter. My husband and I also have very respectable salaries, and the women I work with are much like the one you described. I dare to be different- the most expensive purse I've ever had was 25 bucks! Why waste money on trivial things like that when you can use the money to take a great vacation or pump up your savings account?

Quality!
The exquisite leather that goes into making expensive handbags. The workmanship is flawless.
The purse will last for years. Unlike a purse from PayLess that falls apart in one month!
There is a saying, "you get what you pay for."
I'm sure most women would not be able to distinguish an expensive designer purse, from a Payless purse. Especially with so many fakes being sold online and elsewhere.
Women see celebrities with $3,000 purses and want one. They don't realize that many celebrities get free stuff. Also, many women, due to insecurity, or something else, have a need to "show-off," that they have something that will be the "envy" of their friends.

Well I am a woman and I don't love expensive purses or shoes. Well, I know women like to feel classy and maybe expensive things will help them feel classy. I am not sure about that, but if you are the one shopping, I do know that shopping cheers everyone up. That could be another reason.

Hehe, my boyfriend doesn't understand this phenomenon either.
I think it just has something to dowith the fact that quality dens't feel the same as discount department store bargains. Shoes from Payless Shoe Source are never going to be as comfortable or luxurious as Fluevogs, Prada, etc.
Now I realize that some people are all about making a statement, and they relish the fact that when people see their full set of Louis Vuitton monogrammed luggage, they KNOW what that costs... But for me, it's just about quality and the fact that I know I'm investing in something I won't soon have to replace.
Does that make sense? I guess what I'm really trying to say is:
"You get what you pay for," when it comes to these types of things...

Personally, I don't like expensive purses. I can think of way better things to spend my money on, than a purse.
That $2000.00 purse is a trip for four to Disney. It is a Caribbean vacation.
I think I will leave the expensive purses in the store and enjoy life. :)

It is a status thing. Like a man with a very expensive watch or car. People usually admire others with nice expensive items and it makes them feel watched or admired

I think paying $2000 for a purse or shoes is the stupidest thing ever. It could support a needy family for month or more! And most designer purses are ugly, I think.

The simple answer is for show. Unlike in the animal world where the males compete for mates with shows of color and style, with humans the opposite is true most of the time. In the past it was fabrics that were expensive so ladies wore volumes of it, now the trend is towards accessorizing.

the main reason they buy these extravagent purses is to make them seem richer, have high class, and feel like a celebrity.
but seriously i don't care for so many purses that just have designer labels on them.
