For the most part when a person is standing in a pair of shoes, there should be one thumb width from the end of the big toe to the tip of the shoe with the heel resting comfortably in the back 'krook' of the shoe.

When I was little, I can remember the shoe store guy always measured with his thumb. He'd put his thumb where my big toe was and if there was a "thumb's length" between the end of my toe and the end of the shoe, then they were considered a good fit.

Atleast a half of an inch to an inch. Anything less than that, your probably wearing the wrong size shoe. Always buy shoes that have ample enough room for your foot to move around. You never knwo what situations you will get into and you want to have comfortabl shoes on.
