As other folks already said, you can candle them after they have been under a hen or in an incubator for a week or more. But, if you are trying to figure out if the eggs your hens are laying are fertile before you put them in incubation, this should help: If you crack an egg open and the yolk has a small white/light yellow spot on it, the egg is fertile. This is the germinal disc (or something like that) that would have started developing into the little chicken.

If you have a rooster in your chicken pen let your hen lay eggs and sit on them. In about 7-10 days you can candle them and see if you can see a heartbeat or a dark spot. In 21 days you will have chicks.
It depends on how many hens your rooster is with as to how many fertile eggs you will get.
I ahve a rooster with 22 hens and had a hen sit on 12 eggs only one hatched.

first you need a hen and a rooster. after the hen lays her eggs, wait a little bit. they may not be fertile as soon as they are laid. after maybe a week, put a flashlight up to the egg in a dark room. if you see a darker figure in the egg, it's most likely fertile.
if you know they're fertile, they should start to show it (not physically) after a week or so. remember that chick develope quickly and should be hatching in maybe a month.

Hold a flashlight up to one that you are sure isn't and one that may be. You can tell. You do know that a male has to be present right.....
