I think it is name recognition and good hair.

The First one is obvious. People go with who they know.

If you doubt me on the second one look at all the past Presidents.

Compare the percentage of Presidents without hair to the Percentage of men age 35 and over without hair. Get the picture.

I think you're correct that in this silly country looks do matter. People want their President to "look Presidential." Why do you think they were always propping W up on blocks to make him not look like a shrimpo compared to Kerry and Gore.

If you go back in history before the age of Television, the appearance of our Presidents varied dramatically (some were hit pretty hard with the ugly stick). I think it would be great if debates were only on the radio again so we would actually have to listen to what was being said.

And unfortunately, getting the most votes does not win elections. Our current President lost the popular vote by many thousands (he won the electoral college).

Honestly, I think that money, power and fear win elections however.

Having the names William, James, George and John help, too.
We have had 6 presidents with the name James, 5 each with the name John and William, and 3 with the name George.

Charisma, infectious optimism, the occassional witty remark and simple answers that successfully side-step sensitive issues or involved answers that seem to answer difficult questions without really saying anything at all.

Basically, alot of what they used to call "hooey" ...

of course we want a leader that looks like they are strong and vibrant, no offense to anyone, but the lack of hair may be seen as a lack of virility
