I am 15 and have been playing tennis for umm... about 13 years. Everytime I play in a tournament I get nervous once the game has started. Not berfore. I have been playing tennis for so long that I'm, well, really good! And I KNOW that I'm going to beat the person when I play b/c I sorta rock! But not until I am one game away will I relax. It's weird. This only happens in tournaments. And I get really nervous if I've beat the person before or I know for a fact that they are weaker than me. Like my hands will shake a bit and my voice trembles when I say the score. How can I either stop this from happening or why is it happening?

Well each pro faces some problem along the way.
It's about handling your psychology and keeping your concentration intact. Tennis is a very psychologic game.

If it was easy to come so far, everybody would turn pro wouldn't they ?

This is just another step making you closer to be a great tennis player

Good Luck

I feel well-qualified to answer this question because I'm not only a nationally certified Tennis Instructor, but I have previously earned a ranking as the 20th best tennis player in New England.

There are 3 tried-and-true things you can do to calm yourself down.

1. Let yourself concentrate on your breathing. It's steady rhythm is very calming.

2. Concentrate on the ball, not your opponent. After all, you are really only playing against the ball no matter who hit it. If you do this, you won't allow your opponent's reputation affect you.

3. Play only one point at a time. Do not think about the set. In fact, don't think about Future. Just stay in the Now.

My coach told me that nervousness is a sign that you care about the match. So it's good to have some nervousness. But it _is_ funny that you feel nervous throughout the whole match! When I play in tournaments, I'm usually very nervous before my first match and tend to overhit. But I relax and tend to play better.

With you, it might be psychological... maybe you feel bad for your opponent! If that is the case, realize that it is just a game. Don't feel sorry for your opponent. Beat them 6-0, 6-0 if possible. Don't worry about what they might think of you (which is what I think is happening).

Remember, tennis is just a game. When you start getting too serious about it, then it's no fun anymore.

Well, this isn't from lack of experience. I play tennis also. I also get nervous even when playing a BS match against friends. What I try to do is to believe that it's nothing. After all, tennis is a game and games are supposed to be fun? Right? So, my advice is to treat any match, whether big or small, like a game where you want to give it your all and have lots of fun. Win or lose.

It's good to feel kind of nervous. If this is making you lose, then maybe you need to talk to your pro, or whoever is giving you lessons. If you have been playing for 13 years and are still getting this shakey, something is not right.
