There are a lot of grants (federal, state and private) available to women to start a business. Depending on your business, the grant can not only come in the form of money, but also in equipment, education and free services.

Take advantage. Visit your library and check out the grants and funds section or see if you can find a good online resource.

Good luck

Starting a business is easy and anyone can do it. The problem is that most business start-ups fail within 2-5 years. If you want to start a business and have a reasonable chance at success, your first step is to take a class in How to Go Into Business for Yourself, or similar named course. Community colleges and even lesser expensive adult education centers offer these courses. You must first educate yourself on how to do it before investing hard earned savings.

if you are willing to work 20 hours a day, live like a hermit, never eat out or order in, never go to a movie or rent videos, willing to reinvest every spare dime you have back into the business, you have a 10 percent chance of making it work! Sorry but over 90 percent of new small business openings fail in the first 2 years.

First, don't fall into a get rich quick scheme. When you're down on your luck, it's easy to become a sucker for making lots of money fast.

Second, start small. You don't have to invest a lot of money to make money. If you have a computer at home with internet access, then consider selling things on ebay. Start by selling some of your own stuff, then either consider consignment sales (selling for others for a fee) or buying small lots and selling it on eBay.

If you need help with managing your finances (getting out of debt, living on a budget, etc.), contact me directly. I teach a class at my church that helps people get out of debt. The average person pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 in 13 weeks. I can give you the crash course on-line.

I hope this helps and best wishes,

Scott

if you have an idea of what type of business you wish to be in, my advice would be to (1) contact the SBA, a gov't agency, they have programs specically designed to help women and minority businesses, and (2) do a gov't grant search related to your situation, single mom, minority business, there are programs for almost every type of business, and you will receive preference for gender., also seek a grant proposal site as they will help you design a business plan for the grant proposal and SBA application, Good luck, I hope you do well.
