my ex bf was a paramedic....and the answer is....
it depends what patient is in the worst condition...if the patient on board is stabilized, they must stop and attend the scene of a current accident, and radio back to their dispatch center to send another ambulance to the scene they're at. Then asses the people at the current accident and try to stabilize them.
IF the person they have on board is in a very life or death situation, they carry on and still call their dispatch centre to send an ambulance to the scene they just passed.
It's a priority judgement of who's in need of care the most.

If an ambulance is responding to call then the answer would be yes. Most state laws require that any vehicle involoved in an accident should stop immediately. On the other hand, if an ambulance is transporting a critical patient then they are required to stop and ensure that everyone is okay, if so they can leave the scene and continue the transport if able. If someone is hurt, the that crew should call for another squad and remain on scene. Even upon leaving the scene the crew is responsible for letting the dispatcher know and police should still be contacted.

I guess no for the following reasons:
1- Some hurt people are waiting for that ambulance. If it didn't arrive at its intended scene, no one else will do it.
2- They can report about the wreck they caused for another ambulance to come
3- If it stopped, maybe it will find out that the new wreck is not so serious, and this way, they would have wasted time which could save the "waiting" wreck.

They would really have no choice but to stay at the accident scene . They would page another ambulance to get out to the scene that they were originally heading to.

I am sure the choice is - is the person they were supposed to get too worse off then the accident victims? If the 1st person is worse off - then I am sure the ambulance would call for help to the scene, and they would go to the 1st place.

I think they would keep going to their original call and another one would be called for the wreck they caused.
