This question is not really fair, becuase asking who the greatest is is an objective question, and the greatest is not necessarly the best known.
But here are my answers:
Best Known Group: The Beatles
Best Known Singer: Elvis
The Beatles will be remembered long after other groups are long forgotten, no matter their fame at their time. The fact that they can produce a number one album thirty years after they broke up and two of members are dead is proof of that.
Elvis. All you have to say is the one name and everyone knows who you are talking about. He needs no last name and no intrduction. He is the KING! Frank Sinatra may be Chairman of the Board, Bruce Springsteen may be the Boss, Michael Jackson may The King of Pop (or The King of Weird), but when you say the King, you are talking about Elvis.
Now for the greatest. It would be easy to just say my favorite, but, alas, life is not easy. Each type of music has it greats but you can't fairly compare them. Can you compare Crosby, Stilles, Nash and Young to Green Day? Nope, they are completely different in style, but both groups are great in their own way (that is why there are so many awards given out), and who is to say who is greater than the other.
The same, of course, applies to singers.

I think its very hard to tell whom is the best singer or group of all time simply because every era and generation have got their favorite idol or group, Im sure they all as good, For my era i would pick either Madonna or Michael Jackson but im sure Elvis, John Lennon or Mick Jagger is also the greatest if i was in their era.
