There may have been a time when the "media" meaning "news" was the mass dissemination of information, but that is no longer. The media is now a business. What is the purpose of any business? To stay in business. How? By making money in sufficient amounts to generate profit. All media now is about ratings or readership or, bottom line, the bottom line. What will generate sales? No matter what any particular information source says, all the information gets a "spin" put onto it. And, it is not a refining spin like some literary authors would do by re-working their compositions to the bare essentials. It is spun to appeal to the greatest possible number of consumers. How can more copies of the periodical get sold or how can a particular network generate more viewers so they can charge more for advertising on the network (radio or TV). Sad, but true. So, controversy, scandal, "bad" news sells. Now, why it sells, well, that is a question for a shrink.

It's not necessarily negative aspects about the world that the media seeks to portray. Actually, they look for events that are newsworthy. Newsworthy events could be negative, but can also be positive. For example, most of the media industry covered the recent spelling bee winner. The media reacts to what we watch. For example, if someone wins the Nobel Peace Prize the media look at the ratings and adjust their news coverage to reflect other positive events such as that. However, if there is a shooting , they also reflect their coverage to cover other events like shootings. As far as why the media is looking to blame people, actually the media attempts to answer the "why" question associated with a story. For example, if funds go missing in a public office, the media has to report who took the funds and thus blame the culprit. Although media can be intrusive and sometimes negative, they play an important role in educating the people about what is going on so we don't have uneducated voters going to the poles. So actually it's society who looks for blame or negativity to entertain themselves. The media just responds to us.

the media is fuelled by what interests people... gone are the days when good news are the better news.. nowadays, the freakier, the more controversial things get into mainstream media...
the goal after all is more readers.. today's generation like to be entertained, hence they are more likely to read controversial, entertaining and wacky stuff...
the media wants this to earn money too.. after all, without sales, their existence will be in big trouble :)
