"The Custom House" is basically a short story prelude that has almost nothing to do with the rest of the book. The narrator is a man of Hawthorne's time (and, in fact, Hawthorne used to be a customs inspector and probably knew people like the ones he describes in the story.)

The hook at the end is that this narrator finds a fabric "A" upstairs in the old custom house that seems to burn his hand when he touches it. It dates back to Puritan times and the rest of the book is about that letter and its significance.

I always thought the story was boring and pointless. The rest of the book is great though.

relax...i read the scarlet letter for AP english and the custom house is not written in old english. it's just a basis for the times...like it gives background information on colonial america and information on exactly why hester is treated the way she is. it explains the customs, the culture, and importance of religion during that time period.

tea and espresso make me lose my urge for nutrients. I drink assorted tea so I regularly ignore to devour. no longer a good component yet i imagine my factor is that you'll suppress your urge for nutrients through ingesting assorted tea. devour intense fiber ingredients too. at the same time as i'm unwell, i only won't be able to devour. Or at the same time as i'm unhappy. it really is at the same time as i'm chuffed that I"m shoving in nutrients left and correctly. Why is that? chuffed Christmas besides!

A custom house is a government building, more or less a warehouse, where incoming and outgoing goods are inspected, and import/export taxes are paid.
