It's not easy I'll tell ya that much. If you're singing cause it's good money or cause you wanna get famous you're doing it for the wrong reasons. Singing and music is about passion and if it your passion then fame and fortune shouldn't matter but here are some tips:)
Get a vocal coach refine your talent with 1 on 1 coaching learn to utilize your full breath and best tone quality possible.
Learn how to write some songs even if it's just lyrics
If you are in a church sing in church or find a way to get your voice heard in the community. Get the community behind you
American Idol and the like are definatly roads t the top but alot of people try dopwn those roads and alot of people get hurt due to the rejection that ensues
if you expirience rejecton DON'T GIVE UP just keep working at it
get some songs togeather and make a demo get your music out on garageband.com and sell some on cdbaby.com get a website use the awesome tools of the internet

Record some songs and distribute them free over p2p, torrents, and your webiste or Blog. Some recording agents hang out at "Paltalk". Try singing in those rooms off and on.

Well first have confidence,then get a myspace,try to find interviews with magazines,e-mail MTV,post signs everywhere,e-mail other famous artists to give you tips,and then thank me when you get a grammy.

send out some demo tapes/cds to labels (big and small)..do as many performances as you can - the bigger the band(s)/singer(s) you sing with, the better chance there may be a scout. who knows.
