The problem is, you are assuming in your "if there is a God" case that you know what to do to "serve" Him. But you don't have any basis to know that. If you are talking about some generic God, there are infinitely many possibilities for how to "serve" Him (assuming He even needs serving). On the other hand, if you are postulating a very specific God that you have heard about from other people or a book, then you have created a false dichotomy; there aren't just two possibilities (no God versus the God of the Bible), but rather infinitely many (God of the Bible, God of the Koran, God of a book that no one wrote yet, etc.). So if you "serve" one of them (whatever that means), you are neglecting to serve others.
So we are back to figuring out what you believe, and going with that. I guess if you believe in no God, you could still pick one of the infinitely many possibilities of God to "serve," but that seems awfully arbitrary, and your odds of guessing right seem so infinitesimally small that it seems hardly worth the random guess.

To the person in question: I would advise you not to be so ignorant and at least try and read a religious book. Again, the bible is the most powerful resource. Utilize it, and you could even answer you own Question. "If maybe there is God, why aren't we all servants?". My question to you is," who created man, and what was man created of?". If you can answer this question, then ultimately you would know, that there's a GOD and we are placed on this planet to serve him. Now to serve God, you have to serve him in spirit and in truth. By doing so, you become a servant of God. Do some biblical and spiritual research, let no man deceive you. You are responsible for your own actions.

We do not earn eternal life by serving one another. We cannot possibly hope to "earn" eternal life at all. Even the best of us can't be that good. We are each given the opportunity to choose to accept God's gift of grace, that being salvation. Once we make the decision to accept that gift, our service toward others is really an expression of God's love... of service to those He loves.

See this is the reason I kind of shy away from psychology is really because, its like trying to comprehend how large the universe is, I mean, you know you can't...you know that right? imagine Jupiter right... 318 times more massive than the earth? Dozens and Dozens of those could fit in our galaxy... Oh my gosh...more of them... o_o ... and its hard to walk three miles... and that is nothing compared to the distance between cities...states...countries...imagine!!! Well...don't lol...not easy... you just can't... then again, you can, because I am...I’m imagining its just un-imaginable...
(I know...I’m completely eccentric, but it sounds like you need an eccentric and not an intellect)
God...that’s a question that could go as many places as, as many Jupiter’s fit in this galaxy!!! We know that if god indeed is...then he's not a very lenient god…in fact…I’d say he’s a bit harsh and slightly latent. In the utmost instant, It seems the evil are more easily rewarded than the good, sometimes the long term even. Then there was my question, if there was a god, if he could be tricked, (like if evil people could pretend to be good, and trick god, [if there was one] into what they wanted…because it seems like that happens too since people get away with ten different kinds of evil, even at once) that theory could actually make sense because then all the horrible stuff would have a reason to be…..[which makes you wonder if we were just all tadpoles that formed thoughts over time, and were nothing more…and were just making excuses for things we can‘t understand… or if we are a man created universe and the “god“ is a few scientist that are watching their creation not knowing what they are doing]
Erm…now I’m not answering your questions… but there is so many questions….before that… like if god is….How can you even think about how we would all interact with each other if he is or not?!?! If he is, we could have a chance at eternal life… or it could be too
Okay…okay… I think I got something… of an opinion…an answer… something for your questions;
***********************************
*I’d say, if god were, then he wants us to figure out life the best we can, and if we have a good conscious [which is what we should fight for, not just for god, but to feel good about ourselves and enjoy life] then we have a place in this “eternal life” I think, if you believe that you belong there, if you believe you are good, and if you are good,… a god who is purely good should see that in you no matter what, and accept you no matter what… If there is god, and you fail to see that, and fail to serve him then he should also accept you, understand that, and/or give you a second chance… you know how people say “that’s just the way you are” like…some people are different and an all knowing god would see that… If there is god… maybe he is looking for pure souls…pure and honest, sincere souls….it’s a huge test maybe…maybe its unconscious- maybe after death, you choose where to go…a new life… or if your tired of life…eternal death… or maybe a rest…..A god that is reportedly a god of good is said to not do evil after all…There shouldn’t be an eternal death…Maybe earth, maybe this life is eternal life, maybe its our heaven, maybe we fail to see that…WHO KNOWs… all I know…is be sincere, pass around the good conscious.. You could help a bum out one day, who becomes a millionaire, inspires a presidential candidate, and they lead us into a new world full of positive changes… that like a technical karma…. You do it for God… you do it for a technical Karma… or another spiritual or religious reason, you do it because intuitively it feels good…and it is good, you know it even if you don’t think about it.
***********************************
Its hard for me to give you a objective point of view, because every now and then my own opinion creeps in… My opinion…we are all gods within ourselves… we create, we give birth, we start, we end, we break, we fix, we feel ten million emotions in one life time, we perceive our time, our space, we choose when to die….who knows…I’m not even totally sure…find your answer in a children’s book… read Christopher pikes “the starlight crystal” my favorite book of all time….
Eternal life….who would want to live forever though….[besides me] life can be such pain and such burden, sometimes a long rest like that sounds good, haha…
I KNOW I’m confusing, jumbled thoughts… make your question more clear, maybe I can answer….

What makes you think we are not? If you don't believe in God, what about karma? If you do something wrong..it comes back to you worse...or reincarnation, the idea you have to repeat lifetimes for lessons not heeded or the golden rule. Let those be your guides for your behavior and you'll do all right. We know we have to try to do the right thing by our fellow man, that's all we need.
