I just sprained mine while lifting at the gym. My doctor said to ice it 20 min at a time every couple of hours, but after a while (when you feel much better) start to use it again, light exercises to prevent weakness from not using it.

Don't use heat because it will make the injury swell more, take anti-inflamm. drugs like ibuprofen.

I might be wrong since pulling and straining are different injuries, but I imagine treatments are similar.

being without use of my shoulder, I am well known of what this pain is... first and foremost, do not use the shoulder or move it, sometimes levitating helps, then again so does heat. I really need to know how it was injured

Get one of those heated vibrating pads, (you should be well-connected with things that are heated).
Set it on Medium heat and medium massage.
Some will allow you to localize the region specifically on the controls.
Put some Mentholatum or SportsCreme on the area to help with the penetration of the therapy.

I partially tore my rotator cuff several years ago.... didn't need surgery, but I was in a sling for a while. The best things I did for it were keeping it immobile (in a sling, or bandaged against my torso) and kept an icy-hot patch on it.

Exercise it, the more you just let it sit there the more it will hurt, I injured my shoulder last week and i just had to move it around alot and it's better now. Don't forget to ice it too!
