I didn't know it went away. It has been and still is part and parcel of web...maybe variations of it..like JScript etc...but it never left

Yes. Despite what others said, there was a very strong anti-javascript sentiment 4-5 years ago, that was driven by the security at any cost zealots. Things have completely turned around, primarily due to the popularization of the Ajax buzzword, but also because people have finally resolved the fact that they want the nice intuitive user interface they used to have from Fat client applications in their browser. I also think that the adoption of css and xhtml has improved things substantially, and with the development of some nice component javascript libraries has made DHTML something that's easy to add to almost any website.

for sure Java-script is coming back and this is mainly due the fact of re-using of an old neglected active X object "XMLHTTPRequest" in combination with DOM, it has been there for 5years but no-one thought of using it before or how you say? the web did not need it at that time, there was little people with board band and it was not really needed at that time.

Now there is extensive usage of that active X and it's only going to grow more and more with DOM, in my opinion in the next 2 years there is going to be large changes in web development, and it will increase with the release of new versions of firefox/IE, to fix compatibility issues and bugs and work more with standards.

this came back is making a big changes to the web and also problems and challenges to other desktop monsters like Microsoft, Google is starting their empire of online office like tools: word/spreadsheets and i heard news about upcoming google powerpoint, and more applications is appearing everywhere, Desktop Applications in general are going to decrease with time due to the fact web/ajax applications don't need a platform more than just a javscript/DOM compatible browser, it would work on windows or linux or any platform.

Javascript needed hard coded in the past but now there are alot of frameworks that makes it pretty easy to use.

and by the way, they call this kind of web applications Web v2.0, which compination of XHTML/CSS/Javascript/DOM.

this is a quick general information about javascript/Ajax present and future you can also review these sites:

hope this is going to help, and sorry for my weak english.

I agree with the previous 2 posts. What alternative exists that competes with javascript? If your answer is VB Script then you are wrong. VB script is not browser independent, so you ignore all the firefox browsers.

I don't think it ever went away, and now with AJAX in the picture, it's as big as ever.
