The following will create a swatch. The original design was done with an I hook.
SPECIALTY STITCH NEEDED FOR PATTERN:
CLUSTER (CL) = Keeping last lp of each DC on hook, DC in next st (2 lps on hk), SK next st,
DC in next st (3 lps on hk), YO, draw through all 3 lps on hook: CL made.
Directions:
CH 36.
R1: DC in 3rd CH from hk, DC in next 4 CHs,
* (DC, CH 3, DC) all in next CH,
DC in next 9 CHs,
DC in next 9 CHs, *
(DC, CH 3, DC) in next CH,
DC in last 6 CHs, turn.
Work in BACK LOOPS ONLY for rest of pattern -- this includes working in back loops of CHAINS.
R2: CH 2 (counts as first DC now and throughout),
SK next DC,
(DC, CH 1, SK next DC) three times,
* (DC, CH 3, DC) in second CH of next CH-3,
(CH 1, SK next DC, DC in next DC) four times,
CH 1, SK next DC,
CL over next 3 DC,
(CH 1, SK next DC, DC in next DC) four times,
CH 1, SK next DC, *
(DC, CH 3, DC) in second CH of next CH-3,
(CH 1, SK next DC, DC in next DC) three times, turn.
R3: CH 2, SK next CH, DC in next 5 sts (including CHs),
* (DC, CH 3, DC) in second CH of next CH-3,
DC in next 9 sts,
CL over next 3 sts,
DC in next 9 sts, *
(DC, CH 3, DC) in second CH of next CH-3,
DC in last 6 sts.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 to desired length. (For swatch, do at least 18 to 20 rows.)
CALCULATIONS FOR DESIRED WIDTH --
(MULT. 22 + 14) PATTERN
The pattern repeats between the *'s, 22 stitches, and is approximately 5 1/2".
There are 7 CHs at each end, or PLUS 14.
So, if you want an afghan approximately 36" wide, you repeat the pattern 6 times...
5 1/2" [width of pattern repeat] X 6 [repeats] = 33 inches
22 stitches [width of pattern repeat] X 6 [repeats] = 132 stitches
132 stitches PLUS 14 stitches = CHAIN 146.
