12/3 is good for 20 amps. After a 100 feet you will begin to lose voltage. Voltage is pressure, amperage is current. Voltage drop could cause problems for motors and other types of equipment.

12/3 power cord is rated for no more than 20 amps. w/ no run longer than 100 feet
