In the tube it looks one way but it wears completely different! Brick red becomes hot pink, hot pink becomes coral, and rose pink becomes red... why? And do you know of any reliable brands that carry lip color that looks the same in the tube as on my lips?

I read that you should test all lipstick colors on the side of your thumb (like the ball of you hand I guess) to see close to how it will look on your lips. It comes out pretty close, and can stop you from making a color mistake. The colors are usually lighter when applied because you only use a thin layer, and as you know the tint can change depending on your lip color and texture.

Its because the pigment in your lips. Try testing the lipstick on the part of your hand inbetween your thumb and pointer, that is the most reliable place. Also, try stepping up the quality of lipstick you are purchasing. If all else fails, get a lipliner color that you really like; line your lips, blend with blending brush and put gloss over it. The color will be exactly what you know it is and it doesnt fade as fast either. You might also want to try putting a little powder on your lips before applying the lipstick, sometimes that helps.

This is due to the shade of your lips. The color thats in the tube blends with your lips and it looks different. Find a strong color that will not change when it mixes with your lips.

You probably have strong pigmentation. You just have to try a lot to see which one will remain on your lips the same color as you want. Also, try MAC.

MAC, and NARS usually have the most accurate lip colors. Always go to counters and test what you like so you can save money and get what you want.

I can't think of why that would happen. I use Mary Kay and haven't had any problems with that at all. Maybe you should try it. You can see all the shades they have here http://www.marykay.com/daryn_anderson/color/lips/viewall/default.aspx And, you can get free samples too!
