a router allows you to split a single internet connection between up to (usually) 4 or 5 other computers, printers, or scanners.

In the traditional sense routers move data from one network to another. For a business that means moving data from the business's internal network onto the Internet.

In practice this usually involves providing DHCP and NAT services for the internal network, and a WAN port that connects to the business's internet connection, whatever that may be. Usually routers today also offer a variety of Firewall features as well.

It really depends by your usage of "router." Are you referring to the cheap device that you can get at the electronics store that let's someone share their home internet connectino with several PCs?

Or are you referring to the more formalized defintion -- an IP device which separates different networks into logically different sub-entities, typically known as subnets. They allow for distributed use of IP addressing space, and cut down on the size of your broadcast domain.

Beyond that...refer to any Computintg Networking 101 book.
