Protons are positive, electrons are negative, neutrons ane neutral.

An atom with more elctrons than protons is negative, an atom with fewer electorns than protons is positive. The two oppositely charged atoms attract. example NaCL

The exception being certian atoms who share valence (outer shell) electrons in order to become neutral. example H2, O2

Clear as mud?
