Simple

Portugal
Filthy rich
The portuguesee were the explorers that navigated and discovered points and places in Africa.
I.E. Horn of Africa, Prince Henry, A direct route to india.
but sadly Portugals power was short lived. Because the Mighty Portugal Empire declined due to having a vast amount of kingdom and not nearly enough peoples to live in it.

Britain
Wasnt a major power in colonial time, until 1588 with the defeat of Philip II's armada in the English Channel, when the English Navy than could replace Spain as the major Naval Power. So after that victory Britain ascended to power. And is one of the only colonial powers that is still a major world player today.
I could go into all the wonderful details of opression and conquests but i dont feel like it.

France
Was a second generation Power, like Britain, taking power after the old kingoms of Spain and Portugal failed. France's power 'coloinal power' was gone after the defeat in the 'seven years war' or known in America 'the french and indian war.'
But at the pinicle of their power, France influnced Native American trading, and caused major trade embargos against England.

Spain
As i mentioned Spain before, was one of the most Powerful Coloinal power. And just a rich as Portugal. But Spain discovered South America and the Incas and Aztecs, and were responisble for equally wiping them off the face of the planet. The Spanish, were in the 'new world' only for Gold, and it mattered less to them of what became of the Natives.

Netherlands

Not the strongest power, but by far the most trade savvy. The netherlands major export was wood. And we all know of the take over by the English of New Netherlands, or New Holland, renaming it as New York. The netherlands really didnt have a pincle of power, they stayed a consant mellow power through history.

Portugal-where most of the sailors came from. Vasco da Gama was the first to find a spice route to India going round The Cape of Good Hope.

Britain-conquered half the world. Most of the pirates were English so they went to the Caribbean and conquered the land to be English under the rule of the king.

France-Remember the French Revolution? Well, Louis XIV and his wife Maire Antoinette didn't have much interest in the French people (especially the poor) and Marie was too busy having parties to care! So the people rebelled. Louis and his family treid to flee the country, but they were captured. The french introduced the guillotine and chopped both their heads off. I think the taxes were really high and only the people who were part of the royalness had rights.

Spain-had Chris Colombus, and he discovered the West Indies (which he thought was India). There was also a bit of Muslim history to Spain.

Holland-Jan van Riebeek sailed to the Cape of Good Hope and established a refreshment station because sailors were getting scurvy and dying on their way through the spice-route to India. So he established a refreshment station. This was part of the Ducth East India Company (VOC). He stayed in the Cape for a while and his sailors interbred with the Khoisan. And that is why there are coloureds in the Cape and they speak Afrikaans which is an offbite of Dutch.

both Portugal and Spain had instructed their empires after withdrawal of Muslims as the rulers of a southern west of Europe, they were enthusiastic to spread their Catholic faith. So their powers were mostly the religious surge. But English and may french were considering the following meaning "plant a cross and cultivate the land", you can notice the difference between Canada and Mexico, even between new Mexico inside the u.s and Mexico which considered as a Latin-rooted estate. i see that Canada and new Mexico are more stronger and advanced country than their continent-sharing one, Mexico, also u.s. may be claimed as a strong girl of England. So, you may conclude that: " the most practically adage, the most powerfull colony.". Not only the adage of colonisation itself, but also the inherent facilities within the colonising society, both England and France accomplished sufficient wealth and relatively the more suitable educational and technological levels to establish and dominate their empires. Another indirect encouraging factor must be considered, that was, the two strong European nations were still absent, the strong Germany monster and , though to a lesser extent, Italy. i am Sorry, i read little about nether land, but Holland may resembled England and France but its colonies were lesser than those of either.

OK, here goes:

Portugal - it's capitol is "P"
Britain - made up of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and some other country I can't remember at the minute
France - full of french people
Spain - "Oh this year we're off to sunny Spain, eviva l'espana"
Netherlands - don't confuse with Holland, which is only part of the Netherlands

Hope this helps,
Love x

Each at the height of their colonial empires thought they had the right to take land away from indigenous peoples and force their own language and culture on them. Each also currently enjoys criticising and accusing the US of doing the very same thing.
