The warm weather is probably significantly easier on old bones than, say, the mildly cold and definitely wet pacific northwest. Also, just the fact that it has drawn so many retirees likely draws more, because a big population of your own demographic is appealing; there's probably more social etc things in florida catering to an older population than anywhere else, so there's more choice in what to do, where to eat, who to hang out with, where to live, etc etc

It's all about warmth and health. Old people get cold easily and can't get around in snow and cold weather. Florida affords them heat and sunshine, which actually helps with arthritis. Plus, it used to be cheap to live in Florida, until housing prices tripled over the past five years.

They move to avoid the winters further north. Cold weather makes their joints ache and makes them stiff. They simply feel better when they can stay warm. The hottest new place for retirees is Mexico.

When you're a senior citizen, cold weather becomes much harder (and more dangerous) to live in. Florida's clement weather is easier to live in.

because it's warm and they want to be with their friends. and then THEIR friends go to be with them. and THEIR friends go with THEM. and on and on and on... its a mass migration of seniors. no im not exactly sure why. maybe it is why they go to florida, but it is less expensive than the northeast, especially CT, so i guess it's easier on their wallets.
and the heat doesn't help with some other medical conditions, such as m.s. it makes it worse.
