I have 400 tapes and I'm looking for the best way to transfer them on to discs.

There is no simple way in doing this as VHS is analog and computer video is digital. Therefore, it is hard to translate analog videos into digital mpeg or avi formats. You will need a video capture adaptor.

What you might want to try is buying a DVD burner/player (not for your computer, but for your TV). While viewing your VHS tapes, record the video onto a DVD with the DVD burner. It will produce a low-decent quality mpeg video. It is a slow method though will work. It may be more expensive though it will still be useful in the long run.

Yes. You need to purchase special hardware to make this happen. Get an USB Audio/Video capture device. This of course is dependent on whether or not your computer supports USB devices. Most of these devices come with the software you need to capture the videos from your source.

yes if you got a tv/turner card in your computer and a dvd burner
capture the video to the computer with the card then tranfer iot to disk by dvd burner

also there is a vcr/dvd player out that will do that to and I think that is a lot easier I think phillips makes it you can ask around and they will tell you but you can not copy copywrited tapes! only restriction*
