Puberty is a process by which we grow from children into adults, specifically in terms of the ability to reproduce. He can expect to start puberty somewhere between 9 and 12, but maybe not until as late as 15 or 16. Puberty will continue until 17 or 18, but maybe as late as 19 or 20 if he's a late bloomer. The very first things he will notice will be pubic hair growth around his penis and scrotum, and under his arms. Next will be a growth spurt where he will grow as much as 6 inches in 6 months. His penis and scrotum will get larger around this time as well. He may notice some breast tissue development and he may be very embarassed by this because it may look like he's developing female sized breasts. His body will catch up though and this is perfectly normal. Eventually his voice will start cracking as his voice deepens in tone, and he may get facial hair at this time as well. All of these changes continue to deepen and become more noticeable as puberty continues. About half way through puberty he will begin developing semen, and may have his first ejaculation at this time (probably through a wet dream, but maybe through masturbation). He will probably also experience unintended erections which can be very embarassing.

Puberty is a long process which can be difficult to go through (male and female). It's hard to be the first one to start growing and very hard to be the last one. I strongly urge you to open up the conversation about these changes and to do your best to answer any questions he might have. I know many sexuality related questions are difficult for parents to address, but if you start as soon as possible, then your children will be more likely to come to you with really important questions later on when they become sexually active. Good luck!

Did the school not show you the parents the video first? I have a 9 year old brother, who is going to do sex ed soon, so they asked the parents in to watch the video and have a question and answer session for this very reason.

From my experience with pubescent boys is that they get angry very quickly! so watch out for those mood swings. They can also become very withdrawn at this time, as they are nervous of what is happening to their body.

Well, at age 10-11, the testicles descend to their sacks (scrota), then, the kid will start having erections anytime, yes anytime, without previous warning, or without being aroused at all. Wet dreams will start too. He'll feel embarrassed because of that and will wash his underwear or try to hide it (it depends on what both of you have talked about, he may do nothing because he knows you know about that). Later, at about 12-13, pubic hair will start growing, and his voice will change.
However, the most important changes are NOT going to happen in his body, but in his mind. He is going to start talking back to you, lying to you and will hide information from you. He will dislike all adults. Just be patoent while he realizes he doesn't know everything and that the persons who really cares about him is you. Good Luck!

Didn't you go though it yourself? I mean, I assume since you have a son YOU WENT through puberty!

Besides, it doesn't start until 14-15, so you got plenty of time to read some books and catch up.

I was in a similar situation. I grew up with only my mom who had no idea about male puberty.

And actually, I turned out okay. Puberty consists of physical changes as well as psychological changes. I think your son will be comfortable talking with you about the psychological changes going on with him such as, he needs more privacy( so knock before entering his room), he will start to become more independent, etc.

The physical changes will be dealt with amongst his peers. Most of the stuff, I learnt about what was going on with my body during these teens years was by talking with my teen peers and comparing and contrasting.

Why not check out the Yahoo sites on Health. You will find a site called WebMD, very helpful. All the other sites are equally as helpful. If still in a state of perplexity, ask your childs primary care physician. Best of luck to you in raising your son.

changes of the body...most noticeable are hair , facial, legs , arms and armpit.
adam's apple are more apparent, voice changes, breaking of voice and slowly become lower pitch....
slight muscle building on arms and chest...perhaps some soreness of breasts(not very noticeable).
getting frequent erections which is out of his control, mostly waking up in the morning or during daytime which could cause him embarassment. Not usually cause by thinking of sexual thought.
Production of sperm, perhaps ejaculate for the first time......

He'll start masturbating, but pretend that he doesn't.
Try not to catch him at it.
