Can anyone explain to me the basic scoring in World Cup soccer/football? How many games do they play? Is it like best of 3, 5, 7? Each goal worth a point? Team with most goals moves to next round? Thanks!

You have 8 groups of 4 teams each. The first 2 teams in each group qualify for the next round. Each team from each group will play one game against the other 3 in the group. A victory is 3 points, a draw is 1 point for each team. The standings are based on points and in case 2 teams have the same number of points then the number of goals scored will break the tie.

16 teams compete until they become 8, the 8 compete until they become 4, the four compete until they become 2 and the 2 compete to claim the world cup.
the winning team gets 3 points
the losing team gets 0
the team that has an equal result to it's opponent get 1 point (even if the result is 0-0)
this year FIFA decided to count the number of goals that each team had and the numbers they were in their net and compare results with teams with equivilent points.
