what's the difference? if they're going to do it, they're going to do it anyway: if not here, then a mile ahead.

if you enjoyed that cigarette so much, put it in your ash tray and enjoy it a little longer. PLEASE!

There is no difference, Patz. Actually, I think the sort of people who pollute don't particularly care how bad they look doing it. I mean, could their actions be any more thoughtless in the first place? If further contaminating the environment is your bag, what difference can it possibly make whether or not anyone sees you doing it? The fact you're doing it at all is a crime (and I'm not even referring to relevant laws) and you should be ashamed of yourself.

In my experience, I find the cigarette butt tossers couldn't care less who sees them doing it, notwithstanding the fact it is an actual fire hazard on top of being a littering issue. Your closing admonition is absolutely spot on (and quite clever) but do you honestly think people who engage in such practices care in the least what you or I think of their irresponsible and uncivilized behaviour? I rather expect they do not.

Btw, just to illustrate a point about the relative convenience of cigarette butt disposal. As acknowledged elsewhere on this site, I used to be a smoker (not for very long and never more than a half a pack a day; I was what is termed a "social smoker"). I have always been extremely conscientious about littering. I even put a stop to disposing of chewing gum anywhere but in a waste receptacle once I learned that it is not in fact biodegradable. So, you know how I used to dispose of my cigarette butts when outdoors? I literally twisted the remaining tobacco and ash out of the butt, carefully stamping it out on the (always paved) ground and then disposed of the now harmless paper and filter in a trash bin. It's not so very difficult to avoid littering, is it?

I agree!! I guess they are ashamed of themselves!! Though they do it anyways. If it's a bag or a soda, then just wait for a trash can. I can't stand people that litter. It gets into the rivers and oceans in the area, and that really irrates me. Being a fisherman and all. They are contamiating the waters and harming the life in the waters!! People just need to stop being lazy, and use a trash can. There are no reasons for the litter!!!

Because 1. it is illegal to "litter." and 2. It is justifying the situation of throwing trash or litter out of the car if they think no one is watching. Everyone has to have justification to do everything, that is how people like that do it ; ).

They look around because it is called 'littering' and carries a hefty fine. So, they are usually looking for cops. As far as throwing out cigarettes, it is also a fire hazard and carries an even bigger fine.

You have put 2 questions.

Why do people through out side the window ?
Simply attitude. Who cares who is affected.... and so on....

Why they look around before throwing ?
To put the blame to every one else around him.

These people are born with manufacturing defect without warranty.

Because they know it's frowned upon. They don't want anyone to see that they litter. Also, there usually is a hefty fee for littering in most states.

If you get caught littering, it can cost you a $1000 fine in most states. I can't afford that, can you?

So, I'll just take my trash to the trashcan or home with me to my trashcan.

Haha. Its because they're lazy, but don't want other people to know that if there's any way they can help it.

Society is very apathetic and self-centered. Blame their parents for not teaching them manners.

They're not supposed to do that , it's illegal. And they think that if they see no one around, they will not get caught .

So they don't get a fine and so people don't think they have no integrity.
