By being in the water you are putting your body in a more weightless state. You do not have to worry about the pain from the baby bearing down on certain pressure points, while you yourself are laying on those same pressure points. The warmth of the water is also relaxing to the muscles helping to keep labor smooth.

As far as the baby drowning. That is simple. For your entire pregnancy the baby is living inside water. The child recieves oxygen through the umbillical cord. The baby once born still recieves immediate oxygen through the umbillical cord. Until the child actually hits air (and in some cases the airway is cleared) they do not 'breathe' like we do. This is how they do not drown.

No, since the baby hasn't started breathing yet, it will not drown. However, once the baby comes up, they are up to stay and they begin breathing.

The water is really supposed to help with the pain when you are having a natural birth. I haven't tried it... I went the more conventional route and had my baby at a hospital with an epidural. But you see water births on "A Baby Story" quite often and they seem to work well.

Because the baby has grown in water and spent the entire time in side you in water, some people believe that it less stressful to the baby to be born underwater. If they could drown then they would not be able to do it.

I know sounds weird doesn't it?

I always thought it was nuts. I had a cousin who gave birth this way and thought - what in the world was she thinking? THEN, when I got pregnant I realized that when I took a bath it realized the pressure of the baby on my pelvis. Actually, when you are in the warm water is eases the pain of labor (and the pain of carrying around that baby prior to labor!) and contractions.

Just be careful not to get in the water until your labor is established. Otherwise, you will make your labor worse - harder, stronger, and faster contractions.

Believe me..water is wonderful for a pregnant woman!

The baby doesn't take its first breathe until it comes out of the mother. This gives the woman a chance to sit comfortable in warm water and the water soothes the pains of contractions. It is okay for the baby and people say it helps the woman out more than people realize. When I had my second son I got in a whirlpool while I was laboring but they didn't even ask if I wanted to push him out in the water.

Giving birth underwater is relaxing. When the baby is in the womb what do you think its in. Its already in water he/she wont take its first breath untill the head is out from the water anyways.

It has something to do with the slight weightlessness you feel when your in the water it is supposed to ease the pain.
