Quote:
In a monarchy a king or queen is Head of State. The British monarchy is known as a constitutional monarchy. This means that, while The Queen is Head of State, the ability to make and pass legislation resides with an elected Parliament. Although the British Sovereign no longer has a political or executive role, he or she continues to play an important part in the life of the nation.
As Head of State, The Queen undertakes constitutional and representational duties which have developed over one thousand years of history. In addition to these State duties, The Queen has a less formal role as 'Head of Nation'. She acts a focus for national identity, unity and pride; gives a sense of stability and continuity; officially recognises success and excellence; and supports the ideal of public and voluntary service.
There are inward duties, with The Queen playing a part in State functions in Britain. Parliament must be opened, Orders in Council have to be approved, Acts of Parliament must be signed, and meetings with the Prime Minister must be held.
There are also outward duties of State, when The Queen represents Britain to the rest of the world. For example, The Queen receives foreign ambassadors and high commissioners, entertains visiting Heads of State, and makes State visits overseas to other countries, in support of diplomatic and economic relations.
I hope that helps

The royal family do a lot more than just wave. But most people don't realise it. As long as we have a royal family Britain will never be a republic. If Britain becomes a republic then a lot of damage can be done! It could be the downfall of the country as it makes us very vulnerable to some very extremist leaders! I won't go into it but lets just say they can wave and have tea parties all they like, I don't want them to go ever!

Well they used to rule the country and now they just fly about the world and visit places. They are a part of English identity though. I certainly wouldn't associate Scotland with them. They only come up here to Scotland to shoot some animals then go back to England. Must be a hard life. I don't think I've ever seen the Queen with a genuine smile!

Purpose? To be figureheads of British society, we're lumped with them im afraid. The Queen does open parliament and the Lords every session and her ascent is needed to become Prime Minister and to enacte Laws, buts its traditional. If the queen ever went against something Parliament demand, they'd be uproar and itll be curtains for her. In short, nothing. Do you want them?
