If covering up is to protect girls from being molested or preserve their purity or whatever reason is given as I understand it's not stated categorically in the Koran, then why cant elderly women be given the freedom to go outside unencumbered?

once you wear it for so long, its hard for them to take it off. they have just gotten used to it.

It's strictly cultural. It's based on commandments within the Koran. It says that all women should cover their heads. This is regardless of age, although it may be culturally interpreted as differently. The concept is to preserve morality and decency, which applies just as much to an 80 year old woman as to an 18 year old woman.

All adult women are meant to wear them, it's to do with a lot more than protection from molestation, theres also tradition and habit.
Hijabs are worn from the first day a female menstruates until death.
Hijabs seem cumbersome to us but in reality they are long, loose flowing garments, the veil and head covering I guess would get in the way but after wearing it for so long you would know how to hold your head and body so it did not get in the way
