the director hadn't really thought of casting Tom. If he did smallville would be over because they might do a few of the superman movies. And they would have to cast tthe rest of smallville in the roles for superman. also the unknown factor like chris reeve was when he got the part

tom Wellings(Smallivlle) is busy with smallville he recently directed a episioid and is continuing to act in more.last year Superman returns was being mad and smallvile was at the highth of a new season.if tom welling did the movie the show would stop perduction and their audience would leave .warner brothers might not want to risk that. plus superman is in his 30s Tom is in his 20s. hope this helped!

The director wanted to go with an unknown to play Superman, and Tom Welling was pretty well known on Smallville, so it really didn't work out.

The reason is that by Tom Welling becoming superman in a movie, would kill the smallville series. The whole entertainment factor of smallville is that it is CLARK KENT/KAL EL discovering his SUPERMAN abilities.

I was wondering that myself! Glad someone else is on the same page with me. He'd not just look better in tights but just overall more masculine. This guy seems too "pretty". Tom Welling's just awesome.

Smallville is a time/warner contracted t.v. show with dc comics. not a movie contract.
