If it is a question, what are some appropriate answers?

I would say it is both a question and a greeting .

Some appropiate answers are like "nothing" , or "nothing much" , but if you are doing something reply by starting a phrase with the word "just..." , or something along those lines .

Like if right now i was asked " what's up? " i would say "nothing much, just cruising the net " lol.

You know.... reply with something like that !

Then say " how're you doing ? " OR " what's up with you ? " ....

That's a really good question. It could mean both, I use "whats up" and now that I think about it it's both a greeting and a question, but probably more a greeting than a question.

i always thought it was the same as "how are you doing?". If its not being used as a questions, the response "whats up" is appropriate....I guess!

"cool", "hey" and "it's good" are the answers I ususally use

"It's good" is the best responce in my opinion because it answers the question and returns the greeting at the same time.
