7+7 = 12

because in base twelve, that's 1 * twelve + 2 = 14.

Have you been eating some weird mushrooms or something? I thought this was some sort of trick question, like addition in base 12 -- is that what we're supposed to interpret it as? Or is it some sort of gag that I don't get?

7 mothers plus 7 daughters is 12 women, so long as two of them are grandmothers/mothers to two of the mother/daughter pairs.
