if you still have the system disk to your pc, then reformat the hard drive and start all over, but make sure to back up all your important file/folders on a zip drive.

Hi,

first dont panic, you rarely have to resort to formatting hard drives and such, just do certain things in a certain order to gain more control and run more effiecient cleaners.

Go to the url below.
How to remove Virus files and trojans
http://www.coolwebpagetools.com/blog/posts/how-to-remove-virus-files-and-trojans/

read the advice and follow the sites given.

If you cant get onto the internet because of these problems then you may have to do what had to for a friend who lived the other side of the country and get the programs burnt onto a cd for you by a friend or perhaps your local library or charity center who may help.

for specific help on a particular virus or trojan then if you know the name of it type the name into google and see what you can find.

As for rebooting you know how to this already its the term used for shutting down and restarting without turning off inbetween.

On XP click on Start Shutdown from the drop down menu choose restart instead of shutdown.

Backing up you data is more difficult as only you know whay you have and where it is on your hard drive which is why learning some basics about how your computer files stuff is important.

Good housekeeping and filing make such situations easier.

However follow the steps in that link and you should be ok as long as the virus or trojan hasnt destroyed anything or replaced anything essential which most dont as they want your machine to work for there own purpose.

the McAfee stinger is a nice quick cleaner for the latest stuff. Often gives you enough control to run the Spybot search and destroy or another program like AdAware. Remember everything is free so you dont need to spend money.

Ive been in IT for 15yrs and have never paid for an antivirus, firewall or spyware program and have never caught one. You need to take some basic precautions. If you wouldnt do something off-line dont do it online. i.e leave your front door open to strangers, tell strangers personal details without trusting them or accepting gifts from strangers that your not sure off. Well dont use a computer without firewall, XP has one built in or use Zonealarm free its better. Dont visit dodgy sites or click on links asking for personl info in emails especially from Banks, ebay or paypal or similar, dont download stuff you dont know what it is your downloading.

Remember if your not sure try searching in google or yahoo for info first on it, it may just save you money time and trouble.

One of the sites mentioned in the previous link
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com has good information.
