Not my opinion, just fact. OK. Virtually all the great bands (stones, led zeppelin etc.) agree that the Beetles Sergeant pepper changed rock music forever. Furthermore, more acts give Bowie credit for inspiration than any other single person in the business.

as far as influence, popularity, and sales this would have to of course be the Beatles. 19 US billboard number ones(by far the the most ever, Elvis who is second on the list only had 10)

my personal opinion would have to be either the rolling stones, velvet underground or silver apples. greatest song writer ever? bob dylan.
