Yes actually there are a dozen studies in either direction depending on the topic. I believe just about every study regarding multiple sclerosis is positive or nuetral in regards to marijuana as a pain reliever.
There are a few bad effects as well for other diseases just like there are for most medicine.

depending on what you mean by medicinal, but it is certainly an effective painkiller, and appetite stimulant. Both of which can be severe sideffects of many medical problems. So the answer is yes.

it relieves the pain/pressure of glaucoma for some people. it relieves pain & increases appetite for some cancer patients.
