Great questions. We discussed all of this in depth before we got married in 1993. When I tell my husband that I love him, it means that I have a great appreciation and respect for who he is. I celebrate his good points and accept his not-so-good ones. I'm willing to be patient with him and kind to him. I put his desires ahead of my own. I want to spend the rest of my life with him. He is my best friend. Just being around him makes a bad day better and turns a good day into a great one. In almost 13 years of marriage, we have celebrated triumphs, good fortune, and many blessings together. However, we have also survived homelessness, poverty, crippling illness, and pregnancy losses.
Upon entering a long-term relationship, or marriage, you never know what obstacles you will have to face, but if both partners do their part to reciprocate adoration, companionship, respect, honesty, integrity, and compassion you're bound to be successful. After all, that's what true love is all about!
PS...You are so right! Mutual attraction only goes so far. It's a great starting point but it also needs to continue to develop as the relationship develops. Mutual attraction needs to be physical and emotional.

In the mutual loving, caring, honest, respectfull and understanding relationship, those little but important three words "I love you" mean: "I've loved you even before I've met you. You're the only one for me, always was and always will be. I love you with all my heart and sould, I always have and I always will no matter what. I will die for you." There are a lot of partners who know fully well what that means, even though there are some who don't have a clue. The only way to know whether or not it's true, is only when the one who says that to you is honest and means every letter of every word he/she says at that moment. There's no other way of saying it... is there?
When in the relationship both partners want to be treated equally with love, honor and respect, becuase each one of them deserves it and lead to open a door to the person's heart. Honesty, kindness and understanding are holding another key that unlocks another and deeper door in the relationship, that leads to the person's soul. Communication, trust, and the will to go on when the going gets tough, are going to be able to help to bridge the gap between the two people and let them meet. When all of those are present only then will the relatioship take an important turn in both of their lives. If either one is missing, it'll be challenging to go on any further, even though it is not impossible, but still for the relationship to prosper it'll need all of that and more from the two people who deeply love and care for one another.

There is no real answer to this question but what I have learned of what love is to me is...
(L)isten: and Validate them by hearing and empathizing.
(O)verlook: their minor character flaws as they will overlook yours.
(V)alue: who they are and what they mean to you.
(E)xpress: how you love them not just with words but with actions.
