Most states require a special permit to operate a motorcycle. I know Fla. does.
What you should do is check your local area for beginner motorcycle safety schools and take a course. Most schools have their own bikes and start you off on a small 150cc or so and will teach you the basics. You will need a helmet, full finger riding gloves, and most likely some kind of boot or shoe that will give you some ankle support.
I love to ride and have been riding for over 20 yrs. and I highly recommend the safety course. Plus when you pass the course all you have to do is turn the certificate into the DMV and they will give you the Motorcycle permit.

yes there is a special endorsement on your regular license for the motorcycle. most places that sell motorcycles have the driving/training course you need to get started. .
Yes helmet and suit is a good idea, not always the most comfortable thing on a hot day but better than losing your head or knee caps. Helmet saved my life. A hugh gash down the helmet from the tree but my head didn't have one cut
chaps and coat is morecomfortable in my opion than a full suit

You need an M1 license; you will need to take a written test at the DMV. Check with your state's DMV.
There are motorcycle training schools. Check the yellow pages. Or have a friend help you.

you need to learn to ride on a bike...yes, you need a special license and test and driving and anyway you look at it, it's still dangerous...a suit and helmet just doesn't compare to a seat belt and air bag.
