I've been a dancer for years and years and was never naturally flexible, i always had to work at it and most the time, nothing worked. i quit dance a while ago b/c of my frustration and i started to miss it really bad! i then had an accident with my back and tailbone and all my muscles just totally tightened up - back to square one - now i really want to get back into dance, but i am so unflexible that i cant even sit on the floor with my legs straight in front of me without pain!!!

Does anyone have any really good ideas for getting really flexible, fast, and easy?? I know you have to stretch a lot, its just so painful and i'm really tight!!! Help!!!

first of all, with those injuries you need to ask the doctor what you can and can't do and what are good ways to limber up and get back to dancing. do NOT ask a dance coach because they'll be all "dancers have pains" and then step on ur back so u do the splits. lol. I don't speak from personal experience my dance instructors were pretty cool.

but then when you get the ok from the doctor swim, do warm ups and calisthenix. join a dance program thats not too rigorous, take an easy class, get back into it, and go from there.

good luck!

I am a dancer, and i have gotten very flexible over the years, but i would suggest drinking lots of water and eating healthy and water-rich foods. And stretch every single day, and try stretching one leg at a time. Also do water-arobics and stretch in the pool or something because it will make it easier. Good luck! ;)

you should get a really good yoga instructor. try to find someone who has worked with injured dancers before. they will help you get some flexibility back without re-injuring your self. they will also give you stretches that will specifically help with what you need for dancing. yoga will also help you build the strength you need for dancing. remember that flexibility is genetic, so you will probably never be as flexible as some others, but with yoga you can get better.

Pilates is excellent for dancers. Also when you stretch make sure you do it everyday and hold each one for a least 30 seconds. Also it helps if you use gravity, meaning, lay on your back and pull your leg towards your head either using your arms or a towel. It will become easier in time.

Splits will only come if you actually do them. Make sure you breathe, it helps with the pain.

yoga and pilates, also getting back into ballet is a good conditioner for the body!
im sorry about what happened. thats one of the worst things to happen to dancers! my advice is strech any way u can. it might hurt but you need to be flexible to be a dancer.i have also been a dancer for years and years the best thing is to stetch for 2-5 hours a day and keep at it.

just do lots of excersises and yoga and stuff for strengthining. do workout for your legs. like go up against a wall and lay down. put you lags straight up against the wall and then let your legs naturally fall down. stay there for a couple minutes. keep doing this and it helps alot with becoming to be flexible. and remember whatever you are doing to help, always always remember to breathe. That will help bring oxygen to your muscles and help them to get "better"

Stretch, stretch, stretch. Also go and ask your doctor what excersizes will help. You could also enroll in a Yoga or Tai Chi class. It's worked for me.

I would try some basic yoga, you can feel a difference with how flexible and stable you are real soon after starting! I enjoy it :-)
