she wants to leave him and she manages to do so for a month or two but then he calls and they are back together.This has been going on for couple of years.I said to myself that this won`t bother me but it is my best friend and I really want the best for her.

Being a guy I will attempt the answer to the best of my ability.
She is comfortable with the relationship, regardless of how she is treated. She may be afraid of change and of being alone, and that she may feel she is not attractive enough to score another guy. During her time away from the boyfriend she needs to be involved in a healthy environment / relationship and at least commit to it for about 3/ 6 mos. No contact with prior boyfriend.
After having a healthy one she may not go back, but I cannot say for sure. That is just what worked for me.
One last option is that perhaps she wants to move on, but can't seem to get some type of closure resolved. As her friend you could help her with some ideas. Good Luck.

Some women tend to want the "bad boy." That is the guy who is very wrong, does "bad" things, and who is just not a good fit for them. They are under the mind set that they can change the other person. When in fact you can not help someone to change who is unwilling to change. She is in this loop. I think you two should talk and really let her know how seeing the way this other person treats her makes you feel.

iv been in and am in a current situation llike that too. its bc there is something, something that's keeping her there. you may not see it, but there is something that keeps her coming or going back to him. its not as ez as you may think to just leave someone, there's history. but maybe she does not want to be alone and she is just used to being w and around this guy all the time, he is familiar.

because he's a control freak..and when it gets tough for him to control other things..he goes back to where he knows he's in control always...it's easier to be in a vicious cycle of misery than it is to be happy...good luck to you and her...but until she realizes that he is a butt face...there really isn't anything you can do, except for listen to her drama.
